Writing
We teach a variety of writing styles and disciplines, including research papers, literary analysis essays, personal narratives, persuasive and argumentative essays, creative writing, poetry, and more. Every week students are expected to develop an independent writing practice and complete 1 large writing unit each month as well as smaller writing units.
Reading
We introduce students to more mature books that will help them develop a stronger sense of world issues, human psychology, social dynamics, power, government, and self-understanding. We teach annotation methods and close-reading strategies, helping students enhance their analytical skills and written responses to texts.
Grammar
We believe the foundation of a great writer is a mastery of fundamental grammar concepts, including parts of speech, parts of a sentence, clauses, complex sentences, verbals, punctuation, and labeling and diagramming. Without this knowledge, students are not able to add more style and variety to their writing.
Vocabulary
Reading and writing require a strong vocabulary, and we like to challenge our students to learn above their grade level and begin to adopt more sophisticated language.
