Quest Research Fellowship is group of students interested in and committed to independent research in fields they are passionate about. We help students develop the essential skills in research methods, thesis building, and argumentation.
Research starts with a burning question.
At Quest, we help students develop questions around their interests, passions, and quirky curiosities. The Research Fellowship is a group of students who are eager to dive into the world of research but do not have the tools to get started or stay on the project when the chaotic elements of writing, synthesizing of sources, and forming cohesive arguments becomes intimidating. During our hour together, students have a chance to work on their research independently with a Quest teacher or on their own with the encouragement from fellow group members.
As a leader of the Fellowship, the teacher will be providing students with the following skills:
- How to navigate the wonderful, useful sources in the library in the forms of real books (not just google!)
- How to ask more interesting and specific questions
- How to connect the dots between different areas of study to get at more interdisciplinary questions
- How to craft a preliminary hypothesis/thesis
- How to perform research (this includes reading and annotating articles and chapters effectively, how to pull evidence that matches the thesis, how to analyze the information collected)
- How to organize and structure their ideas logically before they begin writing
- How to incorporate outside sources into their own original argument
- How to incorporate counterarguments in persuasive ways
- How to cite the sources we use
- How to sharpen their thesis to be more specific and complex
- How to proofread/revise our work to be more concise, logical, and cohesive.
